Dead poultry destroyed safely in Feydhoo by Mohamed Saeed Moosa Wajdi from Feydhoo, Seenu (Addu) atoll Haveeru 31 Jan 2004
Last week, six chooks were found dead in Feydhoo and they have been safely destroyed.
In some Asian countries, bird flu has been spreading and because of this, the hens that died in Feydhoo were destroyed in a way that would not cause a health problem to people.
'We dug a hole, burned the dead birds and then buried the remains,' said a high-level health official in the island. 'We carried out the procedure according to advice from the Public Health Department and the hospital.'
There have been no further reports of deaths among chickens in the island.
The Public Health department has been taking measures to prevent anybody being infected in Maldives, and is conducting awareness programs in the country.
