Bird flu links probed by Maldives
Public Health department after many chickens die in Addu atoll Haveeru 8 Feb 2004 translated by Maldives Culture editors Maldives Culture headline The Maldives Department of Public Health have decided to check whether there is a link with the bird flu spreading in Asian countries, after the death of many chickens in three islands of Seenu (Addu) atoll. 36 chickens have died in the islands of Hithadhoo, Feydhoo, and MaradhooFeydhoo, said the Director General Dr Abdul Aziz Yusuf today at a news conference held by the Public Health department. He said samples will be collected and sent to New Delhi tonight. It would take about two weeks to get the result of this test that has been organised with the help of the World Health Organisation, according to Dr Yusuf. Bird flu has been found in 10 Asian countries and it is spreading fast in six of these countries. The research so far suggest that the virus is only spread by the droppings of the birds, according to WHO. WHO has said it is important that people, who work in poultry farms, wear protective clothes, footwear and gloves. |
