Think about it!

19 January 2004

The Dhivehi letter translated below was sent via email to many Maldivians throughout the world several days ago.

Sappe'

Ahmed Moosa, commonly known as Sappe', is a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party. He was one of two Maldivians who gave BBC TV interviews critical of the Gayyoom regime when the BBC's Adam Mynott visited Maldives after the Maafushi shootings and Male' riot in September 2003.

Sappe' was advised by friends to leave his country when the interview was broadcast by BBC satellite TV. He is now staying in U.K. with his wife and children, and runs an active Internet campaign for freedom in Maldives.

Maldives has been turned into the property of a select group of people. They have taken away all our rights and are ruling by force.

Maldivians are the real authority of the government. It is our fundamental right to elect the leader of the country. We do not have to sit and watch a leader rule brutally without any justice, using the power of the fist.

Think about it! Very few among us can make ends meet and live a comfortable life. This is because the government does not distribute the wealth of the country equitably, while the leader uses it for his personal purposes. His own palace, office and yachts are more important than providing the basic needs of the people of the country.

Over the last 25 years, Maldives was developed in the way a certain group of people wanted. Do all our children get an education? Do we get medical treatment when we fall sick? Are our disputes resolved fairly and justly? Think about it!

In the incident at Maafushi prison last September, the government controlled by this president took four young lives without any mercy. There is no one else who can be blamed for this. It is not acceptable to be indifferent to such acts.

I assure you I will continue to work in the belief that it is a national duty to secure the rights of Maldivians, and to change the 'rule of Maumoon' by lawful means. In this effort I need your support and help.
