The harassment of people on the streets and other public places is a serious mistake if we wish to consider ourselves as a well-mannered people. This problem has worsened recently, and an increasing number of complaints are being received by the Defence Ministry.
Women are being verbally and sexually harassed in Malé to such an extent it is difficult for them to walk on the streets or other public places.
All of us are affected by this problem and we need to make a collective effort to stop it.
'It is quite noticeable now, especially in some places. Verbal abuse causes great difficulty to women and teenage girls,' says Assistant Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Latheef. 'We've been warning these men who harass women, but we don't get much support and the practice continues. So we are making a public plea for assistance to deal with the problem.'
The police are requesting that people do not use verbal abuse to disrupt the peace and dignity of the streets. Everyone has to make an effort.
'We take this opportunity to ask and advise those who are committing these offences to cease such acts,' says the public notice.
People who witness these acts should inform the police. Offenders will be dealt with according to the law.
