A private film made in a bedroom by two young lovers has led to court proceedings in Malé Criminal Court.
The couple who produced and appeared in the film were Fathmath 19 years, and Ali, also 19, both from Malé. The young woman was a high school student at the time.
Last week, Fathmath and Ali gave details about the making of the film in a court hearing attended by members of both their families.
Ali told the court that he and Fathmath had been involved in an intimate relationship for three years, and their romantic meetings took place in restaurants, cars and at home. He added that there had recently been some trouble between them and he had attempted to solve these problems at various times.
The film was shot in his home where they had both agreed to meet privately and discuss their relationship difficulties. At the request of Ali, Fathmath came to his house at noon in August this year. Prior to her arrival, Ali set up a digital movie camera focused on a particular place in the bedroom, and covered the camera with a a piece of cloth so Fathmath wouldn't notice it. Before entering the room with her, Ali consumed a bottle of alcohol which he had bought for Rf 375 ($US30) from a man called Mu-umin who he met near Laasaani on Majeedi Magu.
'I took the bottle from my home to the house we used,' said Ali. This house belonged to his aunt.
When Fathmath entered the room they 'acted' for the film, according to their court statement, and when she left, Ali said he made two copies. The next day he took it all to Fathmath and she destroyed everything.
One copy was thrown into the tanks behind Orchard Plaza and the other went into the drains along the lane near Scoop Icecream Shop.
Fathmath admitted that she did do it all with Ali, but she had only found out about the filming the next day when he came to see her with the camera at the front gate of the school. He showed her the 'scenes' from the film where she was clearly identifiable.
'He showed it to me when I was standing at the school gate,' said Fathmath, who has a beautiful body.
Ali told the court that he realised he had made two copies of the film only when Fathmath pointed it out. From then on he handed everything over to her.
'I was drunk on liquor, and didn't know what I was doing. I only found out about it later on. I didn't try to hurt anyone,' said Ali.
Two weeks ago, two girls and a man were convicted and fined for watching a cdrom that contained the film of Fathmath and Ali.
