Maldives most wanted magazine
from Sandhaanu editorial 15 October 2001 translated by Maldives Culture editors
We are a group who think deeply about politics.
Our political thinking's purpose is not simply to join the present rulers in Maldives. We don't want wealth and status from these people.
We are writing because the present political system is designed as a dictatorship. We are working to change this, and to establish a political system that prevents the continuation of this authoritarian arrangement .
We are not affiliated to any particular person.
Our work is undertaken in the spirit of fulfilling our patriotic duty, and to protect people's rights from being violated by those in power for their own selfish advantage.
We have rolled up our sleeves in order to remedy this situation because of the patriotic and religious love in our hearts, and due to the passion in our blood for holy Islam, the Dhivehi homeland, the Dhivehi people, and Dhivehi nationalism.
Yes, despite political independence, there is no real freedom for our people.
The treasury of the country is not being used for the good of the people, but for the comfort and benefit of those who control the government. Attempts are being made to wipe Islam from the country, and Dhivehi nationalism is being buried. This has caused us great anguish.
We are not the only ones suffering. Everyone experiences its harsh effects, in particular educated young people who must take responsibility for the country's future.
Due to the oppressive policies of today's Dictator, political thinkers have found themselves frustrated at ever turn. The people of Maldives cannot take part in the country's political life. All those roads are blocked.
The work we've begun with this newsletter will be judged by the people of Maldives. We won't be deflected from our political ideas and opinions by any criticism or condemnation from the Dictator and his cronies.
If we just wanted wealth and powerful positions, we would easily fill the pages of their three newspapers.
