I have been meaning to write to you for quite some time, but just to be on
the safe side I have taken my time to see how the site functions. I believe
that your work is immensely benefiting our society, not only because there
is no other medium to raise decent concerns on issues so relevant to our
betterment.

Silent Screams City of Malé
September 11th is the day America and the rest of the world was forced to
listen to the silent scream of the human race that erupted from the Twin
Towers of the World Trade Center; ignited by the venomous strike of unknown
terrorists, using commercial aircrafts as suicide missiles.
Post-post-modernism, or, Super-Modernism, it seems to me began on September
11th, when civilization on Mother Earth, as we humans have taken for
granted, shattered into fragments of glass, concrete, asbestos, steel and
human body parts. An estimated 6000 living and breathing human beings lost
their lives and a countless number of living human souls became orphans for
life, with the sudden death of their loved ones.
The silent screams of the dead and the walking dead that began on a clear
September day, in this new millennium also marks the beginning of the final
realization that has dawned on Humanity as a whole; namely, the ultimate
conviction of the total vulnerability of the Human Race itself.
The inept efforts of the American Government to respond to this atrocity,
and the total disbelief of the American Community as to why such hatred
could be directed against them in particular, are the first signs that
indicate the enormity of the crisis that the whole world is facing now. A
powerful media machine, hell-bent on reacting vehemently, for this sudden
interruption of their heavily choreographed daily theatre, went into warp
speed in convincing the 'pre-programmed' viewers across the world that this
satanic act was committed by a Saudi dissident popularly known as Osama bin
Laden, the New Super Power!
Super-Modernism, in fact began with the silent scream of innocents, who lost
their lives not only at the World Trade Center, but in Palestine, Ireland,
Sri Lanka, the Balkans, Africa, Latin America, Indonesia, Malaysia, China,
Burma, Kashmir, and all those countries suffering prolonged repression by
global and state sponsored terrorism.
Osama bin Laden would not exist if not for the barbaric mindset of current
western Governments and their assassins in the guise of diplomats and
emissaries representing the so-called enlightened western powers.
"Here's the rub: America is at war against people it doesn't know, because
they don't appear much on TV. Before it has properly identified or even
begun to comprehend the nature of its enemy, the US government has, in a
rush of publicity and embarrassing rhetoric, cobbled together an
"international coalition against terror", mobilised its army, its air force,
its navy and its media, and committed them to battle.
The trouble is that once America goes off to war, it can't very well return
without having fought one. If it doesn't find its enemy, for the sake of the
enraged folks back home, it will have to manufacture one. Once war begins,
it will develop a momentum, a logic and a justification of its own, and
we'll lose sight of why it's being fought in the first place."
These prophetic words are those of Arundhati Roy, the author of ' God of
Small Things ',extracted from one of her social commentaries published in
The Weekend Guardian/UK (Saturday, 29th September, 2001).
Can anyone come up with a comprehensive explanation for the terror of
September? I doubt if anyone among the living can fully comprehend the
events that rocked the world and continue to create havoc in life, as we
have known it. The Terror has just begun.
If you can hear the silent screams buried in the sand, then you can begin to
fathom the immensity of what has occurred. Buzzwords and the Bubble Gum
Culture of the Post-Modern period can no longer give meaning to our lives.
We have arrived at a point, when each one of us must decide where life
begins, how we can sustain the essential goodness in life and where it ends.
Those continuing screams of the frightened souls, who still believe in the
goodness of life, must surely be counted and heard by those holding the keys
to the total annihilation of humanity with their destructive military power
that ultimately gave birth to violence and terror.

I'd like to highlight a few issues that you might want to closely look into, to provide additional info on where our country is heading to - believe me we are on the road to nowhere... while the treasury is being eaten up by the politicians.
1. Access to your web site is blocked by Dhiraagu. Therefore, there's no way for us to get into it and get the required info.
2. To keep up, if not increase the pressure on the Gayyoom regime, information should be passed to a greater audience - by way of email. as they can't block all incoming emails!!!
3. You must develop an email contact list for as many Maldivians as you can. Include all the govt ministries, MPs and even the Presidents Office on your list. Let them know.
But make sure you use the correct software to hide all the email contacts to whom the email is being sent to. You get my point, eh! There'll be many (including the govt) who would simply hit the "reply all" button and start their anti-campaign to the same group of people.
Additional Info
1. The President's mega-yacht costing about USD 6 million is being shipped from Rotterdam. It will reach Colombo by at the beginning of September 2001. Then the yacht will sail to Malé by second week of September.
2 ..... is offering land from HulhuMalé to his buddies for long-term investment projects - of course with a commission.

I am writing to thank you guys for doing such a great job at creating and keeping up an avenue for all Maldivians to express themselves, to listen and to learn from each other.
That is one thing that is discouraged at home. Even when we are young, asking questions and being curious is seen as a bad thing. Everything is something that shouldn't be talked about - especially when it comes to politics and the government.
Why can't we have a transparent government? Look at the more successful countries - the people are informed of everything that goes within their governments.
And they GET TO HAVE A SAY in how things should be done without being punished for doing so! It should be a right of every Maldivian citizen to know all the (good and the dirty) things happening within our government. Would it be too much to consider how the decisions made for the people actually affect them? Then again, are these decisions made FOR the people?
What really amazes me is that the extent to which we are willing to sit there and turn a blind eye to all the tactless and absurd actions of our government.
For example, take the incident of a man who was charged with corruption and treason. Where is a nation heading when the criminal, a dirty old thief, is more fortunate than the man or woman who is caught for riding motor-bike without a licence?
What I cannot for the life of me comprehend how anyone could rationalize such an action!
And for the person who wrote this in response to Maldivesculture.com: "Once your site was one of my favourites and it contains really useful information about Maldives, now your site turns ugly. I can't think a possible reason why you embrace anti-government. Please keep your good image, be responsible and do your research on history and don't publish other unwarranted perserverances."
....I have to say that writer is suffering from what I call 'the Ostrich-Syndrome'. The writer doesn't want to acknowledge that there is something wrong (perhaps because the person is scared, so they stick their little head in the ground so they won't have to see it!)
This site is not embracing "anti-government". It is merely giving us facts - issues that we have the right to know as citizens of the 'Republic' of Maldives. Things that are REAL!
And life isn't just about keeping a "good image"! It's about being HONEST! And that's what this site is.
For the people of the Maldives it is not really such a wonderful paradise as they make it out to be. True that we have the natural beauty of the islands, but how long would it last? The environment and the people are suffering silently and all we want to do is sweep the dust under the 'tharafaalu' and worry about keeping a good image.

I must say that your website (Maldives Culture) is rather interesting and informative, especially for Maldivians living abroad.
I was especially interested in the article about how Maldivian women get harassed on the road all the time! I am glad to see that finally people are giving some serious thought to this. It sure is high time!
I think it will be great if you could provide more information on the actions to be taken in such a situation, be it verbal or physical assault.
I believe most of the time we don't know what to do because we are not sure how these complaints are handled or how much attention is given to such a situation?
I dare say that a lot of women in Male' are already adopting a rather passive attitude to sexual harassment! However I am certain that it's still not too late to change this and make Male' a better place for everyone!!

The article is really cool man, just get more of these ok, by the way I found a problem in the article about dhiraagu AD, the connection speed is normally given in (BITS not BYTES) so that makes a 33.6Kbit connection a 4.2 KBytes per second so dhiraagu did not pull the strings when they said that ok. But anyway they suck like shit dhoa!!!

I would like you to make some investigation into how much and how Mr Gayyoom is spending money on his new office, and his new yacht which is to be delivered to Male in July. Work on building a new yacht for Nasreena is underway in Italy. Where do they get money to do this? What is this for?
From the construction of the New President's office, who is benefitting? How many times have they changed the granite? Granite is arriving at Male - batch after batch. Where are they going? Who is doing any audit?
What we know is that Maldivian Treasury does not belong to Gayyoom, Nasreena and Yameen. How can that spend people's money like that?
Everyone is interested in crap. Nobody really knows what happens on the ground in Male... [ The writer then detailed alleged corruption between STO management and a resort owner ].

Dear 'webcouple'!
Thank you for being there while many of us just wish...
Please explore more possibilities for interaction, along with your current targets.
Here is a thought for you...
Dear friends!
I wish to share a thought with you guys, in the hope of making your life a bit more miserable (you may curse me, yes!)
that was a joke. Anyway, here goes..
Mirror, mirror...
Sustained unmasking of philosophical error can be classified as a Nietzschean attempt, when we refer to writers sharpening their surgical tools in a society.
Nietzsche himself, according to Duncan Large who translated the Twilight of the Idols, recuperates or rehabilitates his earlier philosophical positions by subtly reinterpreting them. This may lead us to question our own standpoints in the light of retrospection. Sharpening knives, we are, and yet unable to select the first incision as we are forever confused by life’s many contradictions.
Leaving aside the philosophical implications, unmasking error as a sustained activity can commonly be associated with the Fifth Column. For it is most often a disillusioned writer/reporter who acts as a mirror in society.
A writer who is a true believer takes up a ‘cause’ to write about. Pretty soon the writer is pummeled into a vortex of diffused energy, transforming the cause into ‘life’. Through time, the initial character of the cause itself undergoes evolutionary changes. There may come a time when the writer has to face a life without a specific cause attached to it.
She may even come to the conclusion that the exhaustive effort undertaken by her ‘to seek the truth’ was itself inconclusive.
Conversely, she may be rewarded at the end of her pursuit by actually being able to take a position or stand which she believes to be the ‘right’ one. By this time, she would have gathered enough facts to be able to light up the gray areas.
Constant analysis in its most wicked nature unearths more questions than revelations. And yet, the human drive to seek the truth behind reality never dies down.
Consequently, disillusioned or otherwise, it is important to have writers engaged in unraveling the truth, as it were. Quite often we tend to be swerved by sentiments more than anything else when we confront an issue close to our hearts. This in itself is no cause for alarm, as long as people are free to make their own judgments.
As we go through life, we tend to reinterpret our own beliefs in the light of new thoughts and discoveries. Like Nietzsche, we find ourselves in the midst of a transformation of ideas, techniques and practices. Such an exciting period this is, that one just wonders why we complain of boredom! top

'In most cases NSS men assigned to investigate sensitive prisoners aren't told what they have to question the suspect about.
The issues are so sensitive and embarrassing they are confidential even to the NSS.
That is the main reason for most of the gruesome torture, because the investigators themselves are under pressure to deliver the goods. Only they themselves don't know what the goods are.
So charges are invented just to get the suspect to sign a confession that will put them away for a very long time.

To the call of the Disenchanted...
It is a Thursday night in this City of Male’, the paradise-capital of this tropical archipelago. We are in south Asia, where the winds of change blow across the seas, in an unrelenting form, touching all hearts and minds.
People of all ages go through their daily routines, keeping in mind that tomorrow brings salvation from a pattern in their life that seems to echo the unfulfilled dreams and desires of a disenchanted community of islanders. We seek and we look for a day when we can join the world of free families.
Located in a niche southwest of Sri Lanka, this group of small coral islands bears a colorful history of events that mark the unique character of these islanders, the Maldivians.
In this age and time, while the rest of the world is breathing the exciting aroma of a new millennium, we are in the midst of a social upheaval as we battle the powers of globalization seeking to replace an ancient history and a way of life that has kept these island communities floating in a sea of uncertainty.
The civilization that shaped our lives never seems to have prepared us for this new century and its new problems. The gulf between the inhabitants of these islands and the so-called rulers has widened in recent times. The government no longer functions in sync with the aspirations of the governed.
The governance of these islands is dependent on the whims and fancies of an elite that has endeavored to remain in power in spite of the unpopularity it has gathered for its high-handed policies and practices.
Being so far removed from the mainstream of international practices and platforms, the Maldives remains a stronghold of authoritarian rule and a paternalistic community.
The best of intentions and high morals escape our life, as principles of integrity are sacrificed in the name of sustainable development.
The regime keeps on paying lip service to most humane practices of governing, and seems to continue disregarding most international conventions and accepted norms of governing fairly.
Human Rights and all such high-minded concepts are of no real value to these simple islanders, as they are not allowed to decide the major turns in their life and the constant struggle for a decent life goes on.
What can we do when the powerful and the mighty in this land are deaf to the calls of the disenchanted? What position can the writer occupy in an authoritarian system?
What more can we say when those in positions of power seek their own fortunes and ignore the cries of the most vulnerable among us?
The US Administration and the EU classify our region, South Asia, as the most dangerous place on Earth. Is it an irony that Maldives also is known in tourism circles as Paradise?
One can always treat this as terrible whining from Loser Ville!top
