Mohamed Nasheed back in Malé but under house arrest
Faiykolhu
February 2002

Mohamed Nasheed
'forbidden from using the telephone or appearing at his front gate'

Mohamed Nasheed, an elected Malé member of the Maldives Majlis and leading political reformer has been brought to the capital for a court appeal against his conviction on petty theft charges. The charges related to discarded rubbish being taken from a vacant house which was being auctioned.

He was arrested and held in prison without charge for a month and in November 2001 Nasheed was convicted with no legal representation and sentenced to two and half years exile.

He has been reunited with his family and is under house-arrest at Manel. The police have instructed that Nasheed speak with no one apart from family members and he has been forbidden from using the telephone or appearing at his front gate. Only registered residents of the Manel house may enter the premises.

Restrictions of this severity in Maldives are used only for political prisoners.
