Fourteen islands, that had their leases terminated for various reasons, are to be leased out again. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the 14 islands open for new leases are in Haa Alif, Shaviyani, Faafu, Thaa, Laamu and Gaaf Dhaal atolls. There are six islands from Thaa atoll, three islands from Laamu atoll, two islands from Gaaf Dhaal atoll and one island from each of the remaining atolls. According to the Ministry, lease application forms will available from next Wednesday until 4 November at the Agriculture Ministry and the atoll offices controlling each island. The islands are: Manafaru on Haa Alif atoll; Thabbey Huraa on Shaviyani atoll; Gaa Huraa on Faafu atoll; Rihaa Maafushi, Kuda Kaaddoo, Hathifushi, Olhudhiya Fushi, Bodufinolhu and Fondhoo on Thaa atoll; Kuda Fres, Medhu Vinagan'du and Uthuru Vinagandu on Laamu atoll; and Femunaidhoo and Kudhe Mathaidhoo in Gaaf Dhaal atoll. The Agriculture Ministry said that some of the 14 islands are available for lease at a fee of Rf100 (US$8) each, except for Manafaru on Haa Alif atoll, Fondhoo on Thaa atoll, Medhu Vinagan'du and Uthuru Vinagan'du on Laamu atoll, and Femunaidhoo on Gaaf Dhaal atoll. Rent for Manafaru is Rf328 (US$26); Fondhoo is Rf200 (US$16); Medhu Vinagan'du is Rf208 (US$16.50), and Uthuru Vinagan'du is Rf204 (US$16); and Femunaidhoo is Rf2,216 (US$174). The Agriculture Ministry said that currently it was leasing out about 900 islands. |
