Political pressure on Middle East Haveeru editorial 18 August 2002 translated by Maldives Culture editors (The owner and editor of Haveeru daily newspaper is Mohamed Zahir Hussein, the Minister for Youth and Sports, and a close friend of President Gayyoom.) Once again, another dimension has been added to the West's hypocritical policy towards the Middle East. It is clear that the agenda of the West allows no differentiation between its allies or foes. The West's excuse is that Arab countries are opposing America's objectives in Iraq and Palestine. If friendly Arab countries oppose the West's agenda the West is ready to destroy them. Now legal action has begun against some people in Saudi Arabia, on behalf of the families who suffered losses in the 11 September 2001 attacks. In the efforts to link Saudi Arabia with terrorism, allegations have been raised against some members of the Saudi Royal family. Claims are being made for thousands of trillions of dollars in damages. On the other hand, the US has cut some of the aid to Egypt, due to the imprisonment of a democratic leader who is linked to America. Diplomats suspect that this action, against the two most US friendly countries in the Middle East, is a US conspiracy to subdue the 'limitless support' in Egypt and Saudi Arabia for Iraq and Palestine. When will Arab countries wake up to these sort of tricks? How long are they to remain in 'friendship' with West, when they have to tolerate the political oppression being placed on them by the West? ![]() Cartoon: Nicholson, news.com.au The US President says that he is profoundly grateful to the President and the people of the Maldives for the important contributions to the campaign to free the world of terrorism English email press release President's Office Republic of Maldives 13 September 2002 The United States President George W. Bush has said that he is profoundly grateful to the President and the people of the Maldives for the important contributions to the campaign to free the world of terrorism. President Bush said so in a message he sent to President Gayoom today, in response to the President's message of support on the occasion of the remembrance of the victims of September 11. The message of the US President reads as follows: 'The American people are profoundly grateful to you and the people of the Maldives for your important contributions to the campaign to free the world of terrorism. Our two nations have strong bonds of friendship that have grown stronger over many years. The United States was directly attacked last September 11, but terrorism threatens the people of the Maldives as well as Americans. We are particularly grateful for your contribution to peace, freedom and prosperity. With perseverance and courage, we can reach these shared goals together.' ![]() Cartoon: Tandberg, The Age |
