Cut price fish for Huvadhu islands as tuna glut floods factories Mohamed Yushau Haveeru 24 October 2002 report from Thinadhoo island translated by Maldives Culture editors
On Wednesday, in Thinadhoo island alone, eleven tons of fish were sold from the local fishing dhoanis. 'We couldn't sell to the fishery vessels, even though we personally caught eleven tons of fish,' said the owner of a dhoani in Thinadhoo. 'We brought all the fish home and gave it away. Some people sold a kilo of fish for one rufiyaa (US 8 cents) to their buyers.' Someone from Viligili island said that fish were also brought to that island in large quantities on Wednesday. 'Fish were taken to all the fishing islands in this atoll. Some dhoani brought six or seven tons of fish,' a reliable source reported to Haveeru. At present, only the larger and faster fishing boats are getting the opportunity to sell their catch to the container vessels. The bigger boats from Thinadhoo yesterday each caught between 6 to 15 tons of fish. |
