www.maldivesculture.com We are receiving emails asking about maldivesculture.com. Here are the real facts and ideas behind this site. It began about three years ago, providing information on Maldives to people via the Internet, and in the hope of attracting communication from people around the world who were interested specifically in Maldivian history and culture. All financial costs for the site are borne by the editors. Contributors receive no remuneration for their articles, and the site carries no paid advertising. Our report into the government of Maldives in 2001 was a montage of information from almost exclusively Maldivian sources, but we have been banned from the Maldivian Internet server in Malé since then. Inside Maldives, there has been increasingly harsh media censorship over the last decade, a situation which is intensifying because the next presidential election is due in 2003. We now publish contributions from a variety of sources, plus translations from the Dhivehi media including widely-circulated (but officially suppressed) letters to government and historical documents. The site also features original satire in English (Dhon Keyothi), and links to other relevant information. The editors do not support evangelist Christian movements, and neither of us are Christians. We consider Christianity in Maldives to be as useful as imported tuna. Maldivesculture.com supports economic progress for the whole of Maldives, and a tolerant and informed society for its people. We thank the many fine and brave Maldivians who have sent contributions and messages of support, often at great personal risk. Their efforts have enabled this website to become a large free resource of information, links and comment on contemporary and past Maldivian life. We recommend another independent website about Maldives: Majid's Maldives Royal Family |
