Five Maldivian men arrested for dropping Christian pamphlets on Malé street Ismail Rasheed Haveeru 11 July 2002 translated by Maldives Culture editors Police in Maldives arrested five men on the 15 June 2002 for allegedly attempting to spread Christianity. They were held after an investigation prompted by information received, said the Assistant Police Commissioner, Major Ibrahim Latheef at a news conference held on Thursday. Arrested for the alleged offence of dropping pamphlets on the street, were Mohamed Fauzi, 34, of Gulbakaage house, Viligili island, Gaaf Alif atoll; Mohamed Shaz Valeed, 31, of Meadow house Galolhu ward Malé island ; Abdullah Fayaz, 26, of Fodhdhooge house Henveiru ward Malé; Mohamed Suwaiz, 22, of Tharaboozuge house Henveiru ward Malé; and Mohamed Amir, 34, of Nasha house Henveiru ward Malé. Major Latheef said that all five men had admitted they prepared the pamphlets and dropped them onto the street. According to Latheef, Mohamed Fauzi was leader and the remaining four were involved to varying degrees. 'The documents contained information about that religion and the benefits of that religion,' said Latheef. The police arrested one of the five men while he was attempting to drop the pamphlets. Major Latheef said that the matter was still under investigation and he would release more details when the investigation was completed. |
