Fighting Monkey and 3 Faces
Male', Maldives

Photos A to E
c. 8th-9th century CE.
Height: 11 cm

Limestone carving of monkey warrior, possibly Hanuman or one of his fellow vanaras, an ape-like race of forest-dwellers. The back of the figure shows that at some period it had been attached to a wall or other such object. It is also possible that this had belonged to a frieze fixed on the outer wall of a temple.

The front and back of the sculpture have inscriptions in old Maldivian eveyla akuru script.

Since the monkey is not native to Maldives, it is possible that it was depicted from accounts given in religious stories or by people who had travelled abroad and seen live monkeys and temples with these decorations, or else by people who had come to the islands from abroad. There are many such artifacts in the collection.
