goddess nidhi-lakshmi incised on coral block maldives national museum

Museum identification:

Coral stone block
Period: Circa 9th-10th centuries CE (circa 3rd-4th centuries AH).

Identification by Xavier Romero-Frias:
"Goddess Nidhi-lakshmi as represented on a 9th century coral block. She is in the standing position and wears a crown that can only partially be seen. The fingers of her left hand gently squeeze her right breast while her right hand dispenses gold coins. Limbs lack proportion and the etching is somewhat crude."
Romero-Frias, Xavier, The Maldive Islanders - a study of the popular culture of an ancient ocean kingdom, Spain: Barcelona, Nova Ethnographia Indica 1999, plate:14, caption.

Note: Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity. In Hindu mythology she was churned from the ocean of milk, and became the consort of Vishnu.
