I thank the NCLHR for the decision to publish my short stories in one volume.
The question that came to mind when the Centre decided to publish my short stories
was: How did I became a writer of short stories? The most complete answer, in
my view, is that they are a product my own life experience.
When
I came to Male' to study, and as I moved from one house to another doing all
types of jobs, the people I met and their lives - their happiness and suffering
- played an important part in the creation of these stories. Although I have
not included specific details of the joy and sadness of my own life, these stories
have been influenced those experiences. Reading my stories when they were compiled
together, I noticed the lack of happiness in them. I have written mostly about
the personal lives of my characters - the feelings and hopes that they hold
in their hearts - rather than their actions.
Apart for three or
four, most of the stories in this collection were initially published in the
NCLHR's Faiythoora magazine. Now they are being published in a single
volume, I recall with gratitude the person who encouraged me to write these
stories. I do not find it difficult to write a short story, however, even a
single word of encouragement is greatly appreciated.
My hope is
that readers of the collection will not only be entertained but also moved by
these stories of Maldivian thoughts and feelings.
