We Must Be Alert!
by M.R.
translated from Haveeru, 14 March 2001

Nobody would disagree that Maldives is the most peaceful and tranquil country in the world, and that this is the reason Maldives is experiencing progress and development.

'the greedy-selfish people are actively creating divisions, and trying to destroy this golden age enjoyed by Maldivians'

However there are people who are jealous, irritated and frustrated by these advances.

The sad thing is that there are Maldivians among these jealous people, and there are even a few among the Maldivians living overseas.

Why is this so? An examination of the history of this problem shows the answer lies with greed and selfishness.

Let us look at what is going on. Greed is making people a slave to their own self-interest, blindly trying to achieve what they want without any thought for the consequences.

Their plan is to gain some political power, and use this influence to become even richer.

Some people think the fastest way to wealth is through political power. They want self-enrichment regardless of the consequences for the country.

This is the reason why they go off overseas, to conspire with others.

Think about it for a while.

'We shall experience the circus of bombing and violence which afflicts our neighbours.'

Tourism is the largest income earner for the Maldives, and the country is famous as a paradise of tranquility.

We are a people who live in unity and brotherhood in our islands, and tourism is currently the largest contributor to our economic well-being.

Because of this the greedy-selfish people are actively creating divisions, and trying to destroy this golden age enjoyed by Maldivians.

Unity and friendship among our people will disappear, and this paradise of peace and harmony will become a hell-hole. Our society will be destroyed.

When this happens no one will visit Maldives, and the resorts will be empty.

That will be the end of tourist income, and the road to progress and development will be blocked.

We shall experience the circus of bombing and violence which afflicts our neighbours.

There will be days when there is a government, and days when it doesn't seem to exist, and law and order will only be for the rich.

The saddest thing is that there are people who have fallen for the glittering promises of these greedy-selfish types.

Some have fallen for their clever slogans.

In the name of human rights and democracy, making attractive these ideals which have never been achieved anywhere in the world, a small group is now trying to lead Maldivians into the wilderness.

We must be careful to protect the sovereignty and independence of Maldives.

Beware of those who think money can buy everything in this world.

Look out for these overseas Maldivians who are working to disrupt the harmony of the country.

Be alert!
